A Day at the Zoo

Written by Steve G Johnson

April and I went to the Indianapolis Zoo last Saturday and took some pictures of our outing. Our visit was mainly to view the new underwater dolphin dome. According to the Zoo website, it is 30 feet in diameter and 12 feet high. The new dome is regarded as the world’s first fully submerged underwater dolphin viewing experience. It was really cool.

One bad thing I have to mention. When you walk in the dome there are signs everywhere that tell you to keep talking to a whisper. This is for the well-being of the dolphins. Obviously, dolphins may be frightened if there is lots of noise in the dome. I have no problems with this as I am not going to go inside the dome and start screaming at the dolphins.

Maybe I have more common sense than the average person because when April and I walked in the noise was incredibly loud. Who was making all the nose? Children! I have no problems with children and someday we will have some rug rats of our own, but I believe that children need discipline and need to be taught when to be silent.

The sign also mentioned not to tap the glass. Understandable, but someone should have told all the children. I saw one banging on the glass. That definitely goes beyond tapping. Do parents pay attention anymore to their children? I felt like kicking them out of the dome, but I wanted to keep my shoes. Of course because of all the noise and some tapping of the glass the dolphins never came too close.

We got tired of that headache and moved on to all the other stuff. We also saw the empty Australian exhibit. I say empty because on July 17 a pack of stray dogs found their way inside the zoo and killed all the Australian birds in the exhibit. The birds were two black swans, three magpie geese and three emus. How sad. Hopefully the zoo will find something to fill the empty space and also beef up security access.

I have placed my photos in the photo gallery for your viewing pleasure.
