Tiger to be released from the cage

Written by Steve G Johnson

Mac OS X may be over four years old, but this Friday it will seem brand new. With the release of Tiger, aka version 10.4, the seemingly dated operating system will look anything but outdated. In fact this is the most advanced operating system and only gets better with each upgrade. Tiger will probably be known as the biggest upgrade since the creation of OS X.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has released a new ad campaign, Start Something (link no longer available), to show off their dated operating system. Windows XP, which is nearing four years soon, has had no major upgrades since its release back in October 2001. What it has had is countless critical security updates and vulnerability patches. Windows XP has had thousands of virus attacks and gets bombarded daily with spyware. I guess the name of their campaign is better than Restart Something, Start Cleaning Spyware, or Start Patching which are probably better names for the reality of XP.

XP means Experience. My question is Experience What? Constant restarting, cleaning spyware on a daily basis, the Blue Screen of Death with some cryptic error, or having to reinstall the operating system because of virus attacks or spyware rendering your computer useless. Although, Microsoft will be releasing Longhorn sometime this decade, they keep removing features which were promised by Microsoft. It might as well be called Longwait, or better yet just make it an update to XP.

Well, until Microsoft releases its next bloated operating system, I encourage those who have not seen Mac OS X to go to your local Apple Store and see how easy-to-use it is. Also there are no viruses and no spyware on Mac OS X. If you do not have an Apple Store near you, then just go to Apple’s website to see Tiger in action.

UPDATE: Tiger is no longer the current version of Mac OS X.
